1 Kings 10

Bible Passage:  1 Kings 10

Whenever I read this chapter, I began to imagine what would it be like if I were back in Solomon’s days.  I try to imagine what it would be like in his palace and witness all the grandeur and luxurious things that surrounded Solomon.

It is no wonder that many have written about King Solomon’s mines and there are quests to find the treasures of Solomon.

But to focus on his treasures and wealth is to miss one of the messages I found in this chapter…

“So Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing so difficult for the king that he could not explain it to her.

~ 1 Kings 10: 3

When the Queen of Sheba came, she came with a heart of wanting to test Solomon and disprove the idea that he was a wise man.

But after touring Solomon’s kingdom, asking, testing, questioning… she gave up.  She knew that Solomon was the real deal.  And more importantly, she realised that the Lord was with him.

It is a little bit like when we have people who come and try to disprove what we believe in.  They are skeptical of our truths and question and question and question.

Some are interested to find out the truth but there are some who are not interested but just want to prove that they know better or that we are foolish.  So they try and wear us down with their vain arguments.

When Jesus was preaching, he warned the disciples not to cast pearls before swine (Matt 7:6).  He knew that there will be those who are simply not interested and will bother you just to irritate you.

But having said that, we must always be prepared to give an answer to those who ask.  We are called to be “always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15).

Solomon was someone who was ready to give an answer.

And we should be the same to those who are sincere and want honest answers to honest questions.

But in order to be able to do that, we need to study the word of God.  We need to sharpen our sword so that we can defend the truth.

And in that way, when someone like the Queen of Sheba comes along asking the right questions with the right heart, we can be there to explain the word of God to them so  much so that all their questions will be answered and they will find God.

That’s what happened in this chapter.

May we be like Solomon .. to be wise in God.
