Bible Passage:  1 Samuel 27

When We Feel Like Running Away

And David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape to the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me anymore in any part of Israel. So I shall escape out of his hand.” (1 Samuel 27:1)

Do you ever feel like running away from your problems, or wishing you could avoid facing that problem? Sometimes, because of the pressure we are dealing with, we feel stressed and lose our faith. Like David at an all-time low in his faith, we may feel far from God and lost in a world of evil and darkness.

David’s mistake was in disregarding God, but this incident gives us a chance to identify God’s blessing and mercy. We may be faithless but He is faithful; we may be far from Him, but He is full of mercy. Though David stayed in the enemy’s nation, God took care of him and waited patiently for his return. God also stored up for him abundant blessings. Had David remembered all this, he would have repented and trusted God completely.

However David chose to escape and seek help from the people of Gath. He dwelt in the country of the Philistines a year and four months. During this period, he was forced to live a life of deceit. He did not mention God once nor sang nor prayed (despite 1 Samuel 26 mentioned God 16 times). The period in Ziklag was dark.

In times of distress and danger, some of us will forget to seek God’s will instead we rely on ourselves and do according to as we see fit. In these difficult times, some of us will also turn to the world instead of trusting God. Let’s not just panic and run away to the land of the Philistines in this world. Let’s stand firm in our faith, persisting, praying and persevering for God. Running away from our problems will not solve it. Run to God because we can be confident in His plans for us—plans of welfare and not for evil (Jeremiah 29:11).
