Bible Passage:  Exodus 22-24

Trust and Obey

After crossing the red sea and subsequently coming to Mount Sinai, laws were then passed out to the people. The Ten Commandments appear twice in the Bible, first at Exodus 20:1-17, and then at Deuteronomy 5:4-21. From here henceforth, the Israelites begin keeping the commandments given to them by God and have a systematic lifestyle whereby they are taught how to lead their lives and also how to worship God in a right way. Many of these laws have very meaningful purpose such as hygiene law is to maintain their physical health, though in first glance, or at those times they may not understand why. Through these laws, God has guided His people in His foresight and might.

There are many instances in life when we feel lost, we wonder about the events happening in our lives. We doubt God and we are even angry at the things that happen to us. But at these times, look at what God has done for His people, not just in Egypt when they were abandoned, but also when the people rejected God in the wilderness, and throughout the whole generation until now. And this same God would not have abandon us, His people. Therefore, hope in the Lord. Follow God’s commandments in the bible and we will definitely be on the right track, we just have to trust and obey.

Proverbs 3: 5-6

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.”

Keeping the Sabbath

In chapter 23 and previously in the ten commandments, there is a mention of the need to keep the Sabbath, which a lot of the churches does not keep nowadays. Sabbath is the seventh day of the Hebrew calendar week. According to Exodus 20:8 it is commanded by God to be kept as a holy day of rest, as God rested from creation. In the New Testament, Jesus also commanded he disciples to keep the Sabbath on many instances and He Himself also keeps it. (Mark1:21,Acts18:4) Besides directly telling them to keep the Sabbath, He also tells the people to keep the ten commandments which includes Sabbath as the fourth commandment.

Hebrew Transliteration English
Yom Rishon First Day (Sunday)
Yom Sheini Second Day (Monday)
Yom Shlishi Third Day (Tuesday)
Yom R’vi’i Fourth Day (Wednesday)
Yom Chamishi Fifth Day (Thursday)
Yom Shishi Sixth Day (Friday)
Yom Shabbat Sabbath Day (Saturday)

The starting of the Sabbath will be from the evening of Friday to the evening of Saturday. Most churches worship instead on Sunday which they argue that the early church very soon began meeting on Sunday in honor of the resurrection of Jesus, which took place on the first day of the week. However, it is important to not change anything from the bible, and we should follow what Jesus commanded, as to keeping the Sabbath on that day itself.

Revelation 22:18-19

“I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book.”

Therefore, let us always refer back to the bible and follow what the bible instructs, not letting our faith be based on man’s instructions. Trusting God’s words is always the best way.

One of the hardest things to do as human beings is to trust and obey. In this day and age, it is never easy to put your trust in someone you hardly know anything about or in someone you hardly even see on a day to day basis. And on top of trusting, there comes the issue of obedience.
The thing is, God isn’t like any other human being on this planet. It has been established that He is our king and that we owe more than just our lives to Him. So why aren’t we trying harder to trust and obey?
Life is only as straightforward as we hope for it to be.

It is a word in season. I am going through a lot lately, and I have been given advice that isn’t so clear. All I want to to is obey God regardless. And so I came here to this study site, my favorite.

Basically, I and my wife have had a challenging start to marriage and have hurt each other a lot even though we are both pastors. None of us has been unfaithful. And as much as my wife exhibits often some traits I don’t find Christlike I don’t seek to divorce her. Yet, my parents, and some fellow pastors who have counseled us recommend I divorce her. She wanted a divorce last year but apologised and changed her mind. Yet I am daily being pressed by family and others to leave her.

Some brotherly counsel and encouragement would be appreciated

        Dear Ebo,

Really thank God that this site has been such an encouragement and blessing to you. Sometimes it is really amazing what God can do with how little you have to offer. We can only be His instruments, and truly, it is His words that touched you.

I’m sorry to hear about the challenges in your marriage and can sense that it is probably not easy for you at the moment. I’m not sure about the details and so probably cannot (and should not) comment much (and especially not in this open blog). But I just want to let you know that I will be praying for you. May God give you the wisdom to know what to do.

I hope you don’t mind me sharing a passage from the Bible though, because this was the first thing that came to my mind when I first read your comments. May God bless you.

The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?”

And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?”

He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.” (Matthew 19:3-9)

        Blessings,
