Hebrews 4

Bible Passage:  Hebrews 4

11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

~ Hebrews 4:11-13

The sub-title in my Bible for the above verses say, “The Word Discovers Our Condition”.

Why do we choose to read the Bible daily? (ok… try to…)

Why do we attend services so often?

Why do we strive to obey His commandments?

There seems to be a lot of whys…

And the author of Hebrews encourages us to be diligent to enter that rest.  Even if we are doing all the right things … we must work at it lest we fall because of our disobedience.

And one of the very clear ways for us to know our disobedience is through the Word of God.

Now no one truly knows us .. except God and ourselves.

We can hide behind a persona or image and no one knows the true you.

But God knows.

And the Word of God knows as well!

Here it says that God’s Word knows “the thoughts and intents of the heart”.  This is indeed frightening because we know that many a times, our “heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).

The Word of God is like a sword that pierces and penetrates – so that everything is exposed.  But there is a purpose behind this… it is to give us life.

We may try and hide who we are But….

It is a huge but…

No one is hidden from Him. We are all naked and open before Him…. and need to give an account of our actions.

Imagine someone who knows every single thing of our lives – from our innermost thoughts and darkest secrets… even our wicked thoughts…

A bit unsettling isn’t it?  For years we have carefully build up a front or image – and we like to keep it that way.  But if we are not careful, we can become like the Pharisees and Scribes.. the “whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones” (Matt 23:27).

So remember – God’s Word knows our condition.  And nothing is hidden from God.  We must live our lives as God sees, God knows and God approved.

God’s guidance for the new week ahead.
