Bible Passage: John 3

Nicodemus’ occupation was a Pharisee, a member of the Sanhedrin.

Perhaps that was why he only came to speak to Jesus at night, so that no one would see him doing so. He was afraid that if he spoke to Jesus in broad daylight, people might report him to the Pharisees.

I imagine Jesus must be feeling really sad if we do the same. Today are we proud to proclaim that we are members of the True Church? Do we willingly and happily share with others the precious salvation grace that Jesus is freely giving? There is a truthseeker from church who is very evangelical, and to date she has brought about 4 of her friends to church and get to know our Lord Jesus. This really puts me to shame…do I quietly believe in God? Or am I proud to be chosen by Jesus as part of His salvation plan and am willing to share with my non-believing friends and family?

Despite that, Nicodemus had a deep feeling that there must be a great truth to be discovered..He suspected that Jesus is the Messiah promised to Israel by God.

He was wise and inquisitive, and not satisfied with what the Pharisees’ teachings.

Nicodemus was mentioned again later on. Jesus told him that he must be born again, and he did as he was told. He stood up for Jesus when the Pharisees were conspiring against him (John 7:50-51).

He helped Joseph of Arimathea take Jesus’ body down from the cross and lay it in a tomb, at great risk to his safety and reputation. He also donated 75 pounds of expensive myrrh and aloes to anoint Jesus’ body after He died.

Nicodemus was a model of faith and courage for us to follow.

As members of the True Church in the latter days, we pray that we could be preserved by God in our faiths, and continue to uphold the truth. In face of persecutions, can we still have the courage to be faithful to our Lord Jesus?

May God preserve us.
