Proverbs 2

My family loves watching television.  Ok… we love watching TV series of almost anything.

Maybe a bit too much.  But it is nice to sit as a family and watch something that we all enjoy together.

But recently I have been uncomfortable watching some of the TV dramas or comedies.

The reason for this is that the content has become more and more questionable.  Ask yourself… if you have been watching TV recently, do any of these themes sound familiar?

Same sex marriages.  Foul language being uttered in family comedies.  Lady comedians make fun of sexual parts. Gays openly kissing. Those who are anti-gay are deemed as narrow minded, bigots.  Openness…

And these are all messages that our kids get inundated nowadays.  So much so that it can be easily taken for the norm instead of something that is seriously wrong and against the Bible.

We desperately need the Word of God and His wisdom to show us what is right and wrong.

And today’s passage is a good reminder about what we Christians should pursue:

Bible Passage:  Proverbs 2

This chapter starts by prompting us to desire strongly wisdom.

My son, if you receive my words,
And treasure my commands within you,
So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And lift up your voice for understanding,
If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;

~ Proverbs 2:1-4

For anyone who desires wisdom, he or she must first be willing to listen to it… put their ears to work and to ask questions.  And the reward of doing so is to learn more.

When I was young, I was always fascinated with the story of King Solomon’s Lost Mines… but the true treasure that Solomon was telling us all along was actually the Wisdom of God.  There must be this thirst for the Word of God today… just like a deer that pants for streams of water (Psalm 42:1).  The deer searches for water so that it can survive.  So too should we seek for wisdom if we want to live.

Then you will understand righteousness and justice,
Equity and every good path.

10 When wisdom enters your heart,
And knowledge is pleasant to your soul,
11 Discretion will preserve you;
Understanding will keep you,
12 To deliver you from the way of evil,
From the man who speaks perverse things,
13 From those who leave the paths of uprightness
To walk in the ways of darkness;
14 Who rejoice in doing evil,
And delight in the perversity of the wicked;
15 Whose ways are crooked,
And who are devious in their paths;

~ Proverbs 2:9-15

Solomon is telling us about two ways.

One of the way is in darkness.  In verse 13, there are those who are evil who hide from the light because they are afraid that the light will show everyone their true behaviour.  In verse 15, the evil is said to be crooked, walking in the wrong path.

Jesus tells us of another way…

13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

~ Matt 7:13-14

Solomon says that if we follow God’s wisdom, then we are on the right path (v 9).

It is like choosing the narrow gate – for though the way is difficult, it leads to life.  It’s the opposite of what is said in verse 19 …

None who go to her return,
Nor do they regain the paths of life—

~ Proverbs 2:19

Here, the man has chosen to walk on the wrong way… and they will not regain the paths of life…

Everyday we are faced with decisions and choices to make.

It’s easy to go along with the flow of the world and think nothing of our choices.

That’s why we must seek wisdom, for…

Then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;
He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
He is a shield to those who walk uprightly;
He guards the paths of justice,
And preserves the way of His saints.
Then you will understand righteousness and justice,
Equity and every good path.

~ Proverbs 2:5-9
