1 Corinthians Chapter 12

Every Sabbath, I would be reminded of this verse.

27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
~ 1 Corinthians 12:27 (NIV) ~

From the start of the Sabbath evening on Friday, after service, we will see different members doing something in the house of God.

Besides the usual service personnel, we will see members cleaning up the church after service. On Saturday, some members will be coming in from the market, with bags of groceries to cook for the afternoon love feast. Some members are attending meetings for the various church groups.

Yet others are there having Bible Studies, welcoming guests and even encouraging one another in praise in the Zamar Ukulele Fellowship. Later, teachers would guide the students in the Word of God. Hymn leaders would lead the congregation in worship.

It is almost as if everyone has something to do in the house of God.

And that should be the way as each one of you is a part of it.

When I was younger, the Taiwanese preachers that came had this popular phrase:

“人人有事做, 事事有人做”.

Which simply meant that “everyone has something to do, and every matter has someone to do” (me in my lousy translation).

But this has stuck in my head over all these years.

In the body of Christ, the church, our services are needed! Not just in the big things but in many other things in church. Every believer has a role to play, and every role is important. There is no such thing as small service to God; it all matters.

It is just that some are more visible than others, while some are behind the scenes.

The obvious visible ones are those serving on the pulpit and standing in front. They are important for the whole service. You do not see them but the ones in the AVA room as just as important – making sure the sound is heard clearly and that the service is streamed properly for those at home.

Small of hidden ministries make a difference.

In today’s chapter, Paul explains very well about different spiritual gifts and despite the diversity of members in this same household, there should be unity and working together.

Paul points out that when one part of our body starts to fail or function – that is when we get sick – the rest of the body suffers. I am sure you are familiar with this.

Any part of our body cannot say that they do not want to serve the body any more. Because this will lead to the whole body finally dying.

And this is what will happen if we choose to stand idly by and not serve.

In Ephesians 2:10, Paul says:

10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

God has called you to a service far beyond anything you could ever imagine. And remember that whenever you serve others in any way, you are actually serving God.

May we all be active in our service as part of this one body.
