2 Samuel 3

Bible Passage:  2 Samuel 3

David was one of God’s closest friends,
Because he chose to be.
He was honest about his feelings or complaints or…
He told everything to God,
But most importantly he obeyed God and cared about the things He cared for.

…stronger and stronger David grew.

Patiently he waited for God’s timing.
For he knew God keeps His promises.
So the long war continued between the two:
The house of David and the house of Saul,
and stronger and stronger the house of David grew.

Though it seems as if we are suffering,
Tell God about everything and anything.
For “God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble” (Psalms 46:1).
You see He is more than just our friend.

And David had six wives,
which is against God’s commandments;
A trouble for later and an example that leads descendents astray.
For it is written “Neither shall he multiply wives for himself,
Lest his heart turn away…” (Deuteronomy 17:17).

When we choose to sin,
We find ourselves distant from God.
Friendship with the world is enmity with God.
You and I must choose to be honest with Him,
Only then can we develop our friendship with God.

So David reigned as king of Judah,
While Ishbosheth remained king of the other tribes.
Later Ishbosheth quarrelled with Abner,
Because of Rizpah and so Abner was angry with Ishbosheth.
So he helped David become king with his power.

Even though God does not work straight away,
His plan for us is for our good.
Though we may not see what happens today,
Trust that He is working right now,
And in timely essence He will show us the way.

David did not ask to rule over the whole of Israel,
Neither did he have any ill intentions against Abner.
In the covenant David only wanted them to return his wife,
But Abner and the elders returned Israel to David on their own accord.
However Joab objected David for not taking the enemy’s life.

Abner’s motive was to gain David’s support and power.
Joab’s motive was full of hatred and vengeance for his brother’s death.
The ambition of Abner caused him to be murdered,
While the ambition of Joab caused him and his household to be cursed.
For the Lord shall repay the evildoer according to his wickedness.

Every time we trust God and do whatever He says,
Our relationship with God deepens.
We obey God because we love Him and trust Him.
Therefore when others do evil things,
We will hate evil with a passion and love others as He loves all man.

“… I am weak today, though anointed king…”

None of God’s friends are perfect,
Neither does God expect you to be.
He only asks for honesty and obedience.
We will find that our friendship with God grows stronger too,
“For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Cor 12:10).

What practical steps will I make today in order to grow closer to God?

David began to demonstrate his flair in the political arena.

When Abner defected to the camp of David, David made a feast for Abner and the men who were with him (2 Sam 3:20).

When Abner was murdered, David gave him a grand funeral which King David himself followed the coffin. (2 Sam 3:31)

When the people came to persuade David to eat food, he convinced them. “For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it had not been the king’s intent to kill Abner the son of Ner.” (2 Sam 3:37)

Why did David do all these big actions?
Bec King David’s kingdom is weak and he needed to gain the heart and support of people.
Bec King David lost a prince and a great man(chin bible:元帅ie general) to fight battles for him.
Bec King David’s generals, Joab and Abishai the sons of Zeruiah, were harsh and acted according to their will (2 Sam 3:26,30).

King David was maturing as a king.
At the same time, he was also moving further into arms of women (2 Sam 3:2-5).
