Acts of Apostles

Acts Chapter 21

After a long and difficult journey, Paul finally arrives in Jerusalem.

Along the way, there were occasions when the brethren pleaded for him not to go to Jerusalem – knowing that chains and bondage awaited him. Yet, Paul pressed on resolutely.

When he arrived in Jerusalem, he was warmly greeted by the leaders of the church. But they were aware that Paul might be falsely charged by his enemies and made plans for Paul. But, soon a rumour started that Paul had taken a Gentile to the temple and because of this misunderstanding – a riot was incited and Paul lands up in prison.

Through it all, we continue to see how seriously Paul took his commitment to Jesus.

Despite knowing that the path he has chosen will only lead to prison and hardship…. despite all the persistent and heart-breaking warnings and pleadings of other believers, he could not be deterred from doing he wanted to do for God.

Why was this so?

I believe it was because of Paul’s personal encounter with Jesus that proved to him that God can be trusted … even though the way ahead is uncertain.

Why was that? Because Paul had a personal encounter with Jesus that proved to him that God can be trusted.

God’s way is the best way,
Tho’ I may not see.
Why Sorrows and trials
Oft gather ’round me.
He ever is seeking
My gold to refine
So humbly I trust Him,
My Saviour divine.

God’s way is the best way,
God’s way is the right way,
I’ll trust in Him alway,
He knoweth the best.

Are those words familiar? It is taken from hymn 402 – God’s Way.

This hymn came to mind as I reflected on this passage. Paul was fully committed to his work and journey even though the way ahead was potentially dangerous and full of trouble. Why?

‘Cause God’s way is the best and right way. His foresight is perfect. His plans are right.

God’s way is rarely easy and it needs our commitment.

Can we be like Paul and proclaim here:

“….. For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”
~ Acts 21:13b

This is true commitment to the work of God.

What about us today? Is anything holding you back from exercising faith and obedience with boldness and courage like Paul?

When people try to influence you not to press on in your commitment to Jesus. What would you do?

As I reflect on this passage today, I realise that there is still much for me to learn and do.

But let us be reminded that if we commit to God’s way, we can be assured that He knoweth the best!

If you want to sing along with me to this hymn, I love this version 🙂
