Gates in the Wall

Bible Passage: Nehemiah 3

Chapter 3 tells us about the rebuilding of the walls and specifically the gates that separated each section.  What stands out is the names of people recorded doing the work.

God takes time to record names. This chapter did not tell us “Lots and lots of people made repairs to the walls”. Instead, each individual name was recorded down specifically, for all eternity.

Our servitude to God is always remembered by Him. Sometimes we feel our church work is done in vain, with little or no results, or that no one sees them.

But God remembers every action and every effort we make to serve Him and serve His church. Nothing is done in vain for our Lord. Hence, we should never lose heart in doing work for God.

Another lesson we learn from today’s reading, is that the rebuilding process is a team effort. To rebuild the gates and walls, everyone has to play their part. Our attitudes towards church work is very important.

The church body does not consist of just the chairman, deacons and preachers, Exco or Youth Commitee. Each and every TJC member has their part to play.

Is evangelism restricted to only the younger church members who have the energy to knock on doors and spread the gospel?

No! Each of us regardless of age can reach out to our colleagues, neighbours and unbelieving family members and friends.

If you are unsure what you can offer, you can start off by praying for the church. There is always so much to pray for. if we as a church pray in earnestness and unity, surely God will be pleased and hear our prayers.

“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

Matthew 18:20

The people who contributed to this rebuilding were all willing to get their hands dirty and do the work. They all volunteered knowing this would bring glory to God’s name.

Sometimes we think we might get rewards in this life, and get discouraged if that did not happen.

However, take heart that there is a greater and eternal reward in heaven. The effort we put in our spiritual nurtures and church work for our Lord, the sweat and tears we put into our prayers, will store up our treasures in heaven.

God is not unjust to forget your labour and love which you have shown towards His name.

I’m amazed by the efficiency of the rebuilding! It seems like nowadays just doing things immediately after making the decisiom to do so is such a hard thing.
