Luke: An Introduction

AUTHOR OF THE GOSPEL OF LUKE

Luke the author of this Gospel was not an apostle and had never met the Lord Jesus Christ in his three year ministry on earth.  Yet he was able to write about the life of Jesus from the testimonies of those who witnessed His birth, miracles and wonders, teachings and works, death and resurrection.

Luke was a co-worker of Apostle Paul who travelled with Paul in his missionary journeys. Being a physician and an educated man, he was able to write clearly his findings of the life of Jesus. He was a gentile who  not only wrote this Gospel but also the Acts of the Apostles in the Greek language, addressing them to the most excellent  Theophilus  (Luke 1:1-4; Acts 1:1-3; 16:10-17;20:5-15;21:1-18;27:1-28:16; Col. 4:14).

The Gospel of Luke was written probably after AD 70, later than the first gospel (Mark or Matthew) but the place from where it was written is not clearly known

Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said,”…. the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.”

Lord Jesus is the Son of God. Lord Jesus is worthy bec He is the Holy One.

Now we are also called the children of God bec Lord Jesus redeemed us.

Zacharias prophesied that when Lord Jesus comes, He is:
    To grant us that we,
being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
    Might serve Him without fear,
In holiness and rigtheousness before Him all the days of our life.(Luke 1:74-75)

This is the standard of dedication and service God wants from us, we who He delivers, to achieve:
    1) Serve Him without fear
    2) In holiness
    3) and righteousness
    4) Before Him
    5) all the days of our life.
(5 points, easy to remember like 5 fingers on our hand.)

Zacharias and Elizabeth were mobilizedto bring forth John the Baptist, the fore runner of Lord Jesus, in their advance age . They could serve as commanded bec “they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandmentsand ordinances of the Lord blameless” (Luke 1:6) even in their advance age.

May we be like Zacharias and Elizabeth. Yes, and Caleb.

Our salvation is for life. There is no retirement age. Our Salvation is for eternal life.
