Philippians 4

Bible Passage:  Philippians 4

Rejoice in the Lord always

In this final chapter of the epistle to the Philippians, Paul urges the believers to stand fast in the Lord. Once again, he reminds them to be of one mind in Christ, to rejoice in the Lord and to be content at all times.

As we read Paul’s encouragements we might think to ourselves that this easier said than done. We know all too well how anxious, angry or depressed we can be when tribulations come our way. After all, isn’t it natural to have these feelings when things go wrong?

Aren’t we allowed to be sad?

Indeed, it is only natural to worry. Yes, we have the right to be sad sometimes.

But do you like to be worried or sad?

Sorrow and sadness belong to the realm of the flesh. But we are of the Spirit because God’s Spirit lives in us, and we know that among the fruits of the Holy Spirit, there is joy. For this reason apostle Paul encourages us to pray and cast all of our cares unto Jesus (Phil 4:6). Subsequently, “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Phil 4:7)

In addition, Paul teaches us to redirect our way of thinking (Phil 4:8). Many of us tend to be more pessimistic than optimistic, especially when we are facing difficulties. But as Christians, shouldn’t we think positively at all times? After all, we will always have the greatest hope – the hope of eternal life, no matter what may befall us.

One of my friends in Christ is always cheerful. Whenever you meet her, she’ll wear a smile on her face. Once, my husband asked her, “How come you’re always happy?”

“I have Jesus by my side, so why should I be worried or sad?”, she answered.

I guess this is what Paul meant when he said, “Rejoice in the Lord always” (Phil 4:4).

Thanks Love & Respect for your apt sharing. When we face difficulties or anxieties, it’s very easy to dwell on them. We tend to allow sadness and worry to grow and keep growing.

Your sharing has strenghtened my resolve to ask instead what God wants to teach me from a difficult situation, rather than dwell on it regretfully for too long. This keeps things moving! And it does not change our Christian joy for the Lord and for our lives.

Philippians 4:6-7 states that Lord Jesus guards the hearts of His believers.

There is no fear of intrusion bec Lord Jesus is standing guard at the door to our hearts.

What about the mind? Does it not wonder when it is left idle?

The mind shall mediate on these things:
    Whatever things are true,
    Whatever things are noble,
    Whatever things are pure,
    Whatever things are lovely,
Whatever things are of good report,
    Any virtues and
    Anything praiseworthy. (Philippians 4:8)

Is mediating all that is required of us? Do these! (Philippians 4:9)
“These things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do!”

“Lord Jesus is standing guard at our heart.” Sometimes i remember, sometimes this important thought slips my mind.

Is there a full proof way to ensure that i remember always?

Paul said, “…these do and the God of peace will be with you.”

Yes, in doing His word one can experience the presence of Lord Jesus Christ standing guard in his heart.

    Feeling lonely in church?

Mediate on the love of our Lord Jesus Christ and reach out to one who speaks one less word than us.
