Bible Passage: Psalm 119:89-136

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.

Psalm 119:105

Yesterday, my husband and I went to the dumpster to throw out some garbage. It was dark and smelly, and with no light around, I was feeling uneasy and disgusted as I had no vision and I afraid that I might step on any rats or the much hated cockroach.

Flashing the light from my handphone helped to see my surroundings much clearer. Although the light was not very strong, it was enough for me to spot cockroaches scurrying on the ground so that I could run the opposite direction.

With the light from our phones, we were also able to see where we could throw our garbage. As it was around 9PM with poor visibility, we could barely see anything beyond the light radiating from our phones. We could only see our next step, but not the path beyond.

Holding our phones closer to the ground and our feet shows our path in greater detail too, compared to holding our phones high above the ground.

This is how it is with our God. His word is a lamp to guide our feet and a light for our paths. Not light as weak as that coming out of our phones, but strong light like the lamps in our homes. He guides us step by step, never letting us down. With this strong light, we could see the path clearly and tread on the right path, not straying away from it in the wrong direction.

If we raise the lamp above our heads or far away from us, we will not be able to see our paths clearly. Our feet will be unable to tread the next step with confidence.

With darkness surrounding us last night, I was greatly dependant on the light coming from my handphone. Similarly, in this evil and sinful world we are living in, we need strong light to guide and bless our footsteps, so that we do not drift away from the correct path and come into contact with things far more evil than cockroaches and rats.

Only God can provide this light, and it is up to us if we want to depend on God’s light to tread on this path amidst the darkness of the world.

May God guide and bless your footsteps!
