Psalm 53

Psalm 53

Bible Passage:  Psalm 53

This short but very powerful Psalm speaks just as loudly back then as it does now.

The fool has said in his heart,
There is no God.”
They are corrupt, and have done abominable iniquity;
There is none who does good.

God looks down from heaven upon the children of men,
To see if there are any who understand, who seek God.
Every one of them has turned aside;
They have together become corrupt;
There is none who does good,
No, not one.

Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion!
When God brings back the captivity of His people,
Let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad.

~ Psalm 53:1-3; 6

I just finished reading a political thriller about a group anti-religious group who wanted to take down the government.  These people did not believe in God and sought to destroy those who did.

This kind of thinking was not new.  In this Psalm we read that even in David’s time, there were many that proclaimed “There is no God.”  But just because they believed that, it did not make it true.  Truth does not disappear in the face of unbelief.  And something does not become true just because we insist it is despite having no biblical basis.

The way of the world is such that true Christians will always be in the minority – wide is the way that leads to destruction and narrow is the gate that leads to eternity.  Our relationship to God comes before our relationship to any country in which we reside. In many cases both in the past and in the present, that attitude causes Christians to be persecuted, maybe even killed for their faith.

We are reminded in this Psalm that no one deserves to go to heaven because everyone of us is sinful.

And it is a sobering reminder – because we are not saved by our works but by our faith and obedience to the Lord.  We can travel the world preaching for Jesus but do not obey God and the church – it means nothing.  We can love man with all our heart, soul, mind and might.  But if we turn aside from the pure word of God and His truth – it means nothing.

Who was David speaking of in Verse 6? Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion!

David was eagerly looking forward to the Messiah who would take the people out of captivity.

We are eternally thankful for the fact that the Messiah has come.  Jesus has freed us from the captivity of our sin.

Let us rejoice in this today.  And sin no more.

    Verse 2 states that God looks down from the heaven to see if anyone seeks God. This to me is a reminder that those who truly want eternal life can find it even if they don’t know about TJC yet. God loves all men and yes, even if we preach but don’t believe, it is meaningless as God is the one who changes hearts.
