Titus

Titus Chapter 2

Paul gave instructions to Titus on how to help various groups of people in church. The older people should teach the younger people by words and by example. This is how values are passed on from generation to generation.

Paul also urges Titus to be a good example to those around him so that others might see Titus’s good deeds and imitate him (2:7-8). If we want to teach others to act a certain way, we need to walk the talk and our life will reinforce what we teach.

Notice the emphasis on “sound doctrine” in Paul’s instructions to Titus (2:1). Teaching the things which are proper for sound doctrine means the teaching is sound, it combines correct knowledge and understanding with consistent practice, and it must also be found in the Bible. This is the content of our faith. We ought to learn the Bible, apply biblical principles and live what we learn. Believers must be grounded in the truths of the Bible so they will not be swayed by the deception of false teachers and devil’s tricks.

The word “Sober” is mentioned a few times in Titus 2. Being sober or to have self-control is an important aspect of living the Christian life. Elder Peter in 1 Peter 5:8 warns believers to be sober, be vigilant, and to watch out for the devil especially when we are suffering and persecuted. From the beginning of human history, the devil has been looking for ways to manipulate, tempt, hurt, and ultimately destroy God’s people.

Let us be a good example to those around us. Be sober and keep our eyes on Jesus, resist the devil, and he will flee from you (James 4:7).
