Epistles – 1 Corinthians 1-2

Ancient Corinth, Apollo temple

Bible Passage:  1 Corinthians 1-2

The aim of Paul’s first epistle to the Corinthian church was to combat the worldliness and divisive sectarianism within her. Therefore are many teachings and warnings that we can gather and learn for our church today as well as our personal walk with God.

1 Cor. 1:2

To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours

Paul addresses the believers in Corinth as saints, and this is something that we as believers today must deeply understand and rejoice over the title “saint” being bestowed upon us. For Paul says, “called to be saints, with ALL WHO in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord,

To some religions of the world, only those who had accomplished certain godly works or miracles could be called “saints”, but in the eyes of our True God, those who are willing to call on His name have the right to this title “saint”. Through our obedience to the Word of God, we were all baptized in living water, for the remission of our sins, calling on the Name of Jesus Christ, thus we are all justified saints in the Lord.

1 Cor. 1: 7 – 9

… so that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will also confirm you to the end, that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

To be able to come into the True Fold of God is indeed the greatest grace that one can receive from God. Out of the billions of people in the world, we have been called by God into the ark of the Last Days.  Being His children, God bestows upon all of us gifts that we can use for His household, and the most basic of His gifts is the grace to understand His salvation grace through His written word, the Holy Bible. Therefore, we have to be obedient and to keep ourselves in the grace of God, never to leave Him, and He will constantly guide and help in our walk of faith, so that we can face the great and awesome Day of the Lord.

1 Cor. 1: 10

Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment

1Co 2:1

Wherever there are human beings, there are bound to be divisions, frictions and even quarrels. But we must bear in mind that the Church is not a worldly organization for leisure or for personal benefits. The church is an assembly of the people of God, the Body of Christ, a people called out of the world that must not be spotted or stained by it. Therefore unity in the Body of Christ is very needed, and only through unity, having the same mind set in the Faith, coupled with obedience in the Word of God, can we excel in our call as children of God.

And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God.

Do we need to be highly educated to understand the word of God? Do we need to be very eloquent in order to preach the word of God? The word of God was being penned by men of God through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, therefore the word of God can only be understood through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and likewise, the word of God is being preached through the hearts and lips that are guided by the Holy Spirit.

Nearly 2000 years ago, when Paul quoted the words of Isaiah in 2:9 it must have stirred up great zeal among the believers at that time bec they were the fulfilment of the prophecy:

Eye has not seen, they witnessed Lord Jesus crucified on the cross and resurrected and appeared to many!

Nor ear heard, their ears heard the gospel and everlasting life from God.

Nor have entered into the heart of man, they received the Holy Spirit and experienced the transformation of their life by the Holy Spirit.

The things which God has prepared for those who love Him, they received them freely.

Nearly 2000 years have passed. Again we who are in the true church are the fulfilment of God’s prophecy. Yes, indeed we must strive to be holy and sanctified. Yes, indeed we must unite as the body of Christ. Yes, indeed when we glory, let us glory in the LORD.
