Isaiah

Isaiah Chapter 9

In the time of darkness, God promised to send a light who would shine on everyone who is living in the shadow of death.

The territories of Zebulun and Naphtali represent the northern kingdom as a whole. These were also the territories where Jesus grew up and often ministered (Matthew 4:12-16). This is why they would see “A Great Light” (Isaiah 9:2).

Apostle John also referred to Jesus as the “True Light” (John 1:9). And Jesus also referred to Himself as “The Light of the world” (John 8:12).

Isaiah 9:6

For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

This message of hope was fulfilled in the birth of Christ and the establishment of Jesus’ Eternal Kingdom. He came to deliver all people from their slavery to sin.

Prophet Isaiah uses four names to describe the Messiah. These names have special meaning to us.

  • Wonderful Counselor, He is the One who exceptionally gives us the right advice. He counsels and shows us the way of salvation.
  • Mighty God, He is God Himself, He is the Mighty One, the same term is used in Isaiah 10:21.
  • Everlasting Father, He is Eternal, Timeless, He is God Our Father. Only Lord Jesus alone can give eternal life.
  • Prince of Peace, His government is one of justice and peace, and there will be no end. Jesus Himself stated, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid (John 14:27). With Christ’s peace, we don’t need to fear the present and the future, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let our requests be made known to God (Phil 4:6)

In our gloom and despair, we fear that our sorrow and troubles will never end. But we can take comfort that although the Lord may not always spare us from troubles, but He will certainly lead us safely through them if we follow Him wholeheartedly, and the peace of God will move into our hearts and lives and to offer comfort in place of conflict.
