On the devil and his children

Bible Passage: John 8:33-59

A couple of days ago, a junior staff came to work in a tight dress, baring a little cleavage. She was told off by one of the supervisors, a Christian, who later told me her dressing “created sin in man’s eyes”. I thought that while the girl dressed rather inappropriately in the office, the supervisor was overreacting and exaggerating by saying she created sin in man’s eyes. Afterall, that day was Valentine’s Day and she might have a date after work.

Afterall, don’t most girls dress like that nowadays too?

Reading this verse in today’s passage made me think a little.

Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.”                                                                                                                                                                               John 8:34

Am I desensitized to sin such that I do not think she was baring more skin than necessary?

Have I sinned unknowingly, or worse, closed one eye when I feel I have not committed a serious sin?

Am I a slave of sin? Do we have secret sins?

Our human desires cause us to sin and hence, become slaves to sin. A slave does not have the power to break free from the bondage of sin, his master. A mental image of a person shackled and chained, forced to do things he is unwilling to do, comes to mind.

The bible tells us that the wages of sin is death. (Rom 6:23)

To break free of these chains, we have to acknowledge our sins before God and ask for His forgiveness. Without a relationship with gGod, we are vulnerable and powerless against earthly influences and desires.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

                                                                                                                        1 John 1:9

    In contrast to being a slave to sin, one who is of God is one who:

    * speaks what one has seen (:38)
    * does His works (:39)
    * loves Jesus (:42)
    * hears His words (:47)
    * honours Him (:49)
    * knows Him & keeps His word (:55)

    John 8:31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

    Who were Lord Jesus speaking to in John 8:31?

    To Jews who believed in Him.

    But reading John 8:33, 37(they even seek to kill Lord Jesus), 43 and 47…59 seem to suggest that they did not believe Lord Jesus nor His word.

    One distinctive characteristic of the devil is he is a liar and the father of it.

    One distinctive characteristic of Lord Jesus is that He speaks what He has seen with His Father (John 8:38)

    When Lord Jesus told them that they did not hear God’s word because they were not of God (John 8:47), the Jews answered in a most unexpected way, they replied that Jesus was a Samaritan and had a demon(John 8:48)

    Did they really believe Jesus?

    What about us?

    Do we really read His living words in the bible and receive His truth into our heart?

    During prayers, do we submit fully to the intercession makes by the Spirit Himself for us in groanings which cannot be uttered be fully received into us to edify us?

    (read slowly, pray with concentration)
