2012 - A Month With...,  The Oral Prophets

Ooops…. Apologies Need… And A Short Introduction to the Oral Prophets

So sorry!  I know i have totally messed up the Bible Reading plan for May.  We ended the readings yesterday when we still have 2 more days of May to go!

But in order not to mess things out further… we going to have 2 days of break and then start on Friday.  Then we are going to spend a month with the “Oral Prophets”.

Who are the oral prophets?

In the Bible, besides splitting the prophets to the Major Prophets and Minor Prophets, there is also another way of categorizing the prophets – the literary prophets and the oral prophets.

Naturally, one can understand that the “oral’ prophets are those who left no writings bearing their names.  You can think of prophets like Elijah, Elisha, Nathan…

And the “literary” prophets are familiar names like Jeremiah, Isaiah, Daniel, Nahum….

There are many roles of the prophets.  They are servants of God – divinely appointed and inspired to proclaim His Word.

There are times when the message they proclaim are for the present, and other times the message pertains to the future.  When it is applied to the present – they serve as watchmen of the people of God.  When the words apply to the future, they were seers of the things to come.

Whatever it is, let us take the month of June to consider the works and words of the oral prophets.  Let us take time to learn from the stories and reflect on how they can be applied to us today.

May God guide us.
