2010 - What Is Christianity?,  Gaining of Wisdom

Proverbs 10

Bible Passage:  Proverbs 10

There was once this movie called “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and Clint Eastwood was the gun-slinging Good guy in the movie.

In this chapter, Solomon introduces the Good and the Bad people… unfortunately no Ugly people in this chapter. These are the descriptions of the characters by Solomon.

The Good…

Miss Wise: brings joy to parents, gathers crop in summer, prudent, accept commands, stores up knowledge, hold’s her tongue, delights in wisdom, live long

Mr. Righteous: delivered from death, does not go hungry, receive blessings, name used for blessing, mouth is a fountain of life to others, receives life, stand firm forever, does not get uprooted, fruit of wisdom

Mr. Hardworking: wealthy guy

The Bad…

Miss Fool: brings grief to parents, chattering comes to ruin, finds pleasure in wicked schemes

Mr. Wicked: receives violence, name that rots, conceals violence, receive death, hopes that abound to nothing, will not remain

Mr. Lazy: poor and irritating guy

I use ‘Miss Wise’ and ‘Miss Fool’ as Solomon calls Wise and Fool females; anyone can enlighten me on the reason behind this?

So, are we the Good or Bad guys/ girls? If we belong to the Good, are we wise, righteous and hardworking? Do we bring joy to our parents? Do we ensure that our parents are well taken care of and that we do not cause them to worry for us? Are we wise to prepare for the rainy day and more important to prepare for the Lord’s coming? Are we prudent in our expenditure? Do we seek to store up knowledge, more importantly spiritual knowledge? Are we able to hold our tongue when stressed or angry and not utter ungodly words to others? Do we delight in wisdom?

Are we righteous people? One that brings good name to God and is able to bring life to others through preaching of Jesus? Are we able to stand firm on the Truth and not be uprooted? Will Jesus deliver us from death through our faith and obedience in Him? If we are righteous, do we give good advise to others? If we are righteous, does the Holy Spirit renew us and continually recharge our spiritual lives?

These are some questions that Solomon indirectly asks us. In this Spiritual Meeting, we have learnt how to breakthrough in wisdom, worship, prayer and service to God. We have received abundant spiritual food for our souls and it is time to reflect on ourselves and put into practice the knowledge we received.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). If we learn to fear the Lord and to put Him first in our lives, we have learned to be wise. Since we put the Lord first in our lives, we will live righteously because we strive to do what pleases Him. Since we strive we also will gain spiritual wealth and knowledge. Through fearing God and having faith in Jesus, we are saved through Him.

May the Lord Jesus help us in this transformation and breakthrough in our faith! May we be the good people! Amen.

Prov 10:16 The wage of the righteous leads to life(生命), the gain of the wicked to sin.

Prov 10:22 The blessing of the LORD makes rich(富足), and He adds no sorrow with it.

Prov 10:28 The hope of the righteous ends in gladness(喜乐), but the expectation of the wicked comes to naught.

生命富足喜乐。 Sounds like the theme of evangelistic services?
    This is a good life.

Why is life called 生命? 生is to live and 命 is the time.
Basically life is to live out our time.

Is a life filled with richness and gladness a life at its best on earth?

    May not be.

Only life with the hope of eternal life is a life at its best on earth.

An ordinary worker in the world gets wages.

A worker of God gets wages (subsistence), bonus (contentment) and pension (eternal life).

Live our time for God bec He is the real boss who is paying the remuneration package.
