Worship God His Way (1)

Bible Passage: Exodus 25-27

What is your understanding of ‘worship’? What is the purpose our worship? Do you regard worship as part of your Christian’s obligations and formality or heavenly blessing? Have we inadvertently offended God in our worship?

“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (Jn 4:24)

God requires reverence, sincerity and truthfulness in our worship to Him. God is the Master of the universe and the Creator of all mankind and no one but God deserves our worship. Worship comes in different forms and ways – may it be through our singing and prayers of praises and thanksgivings, offerings and services and also our ways of life. Have your worship been becoming a formality resulting in us offering lips-service?

In Exodus 25-27, the Lord God gave the Israelites a very detailed and specific account of His precise requirements and standards in their offerings for the Sanctuary, the making of the Ark, Table of the Showbread, Golden Lampstand, the Tabernacle, the Altar of Burnt Offering and the Court of the Tabernacle. What is your thought of such meticulous instruction?

The act of offering and services itself is not sufficient to please God. God requires our total obedience to His exact instructions and His ways in our offerings and services. God outlined the detailed measurement and materials requirements and He expects the Israelites to make and dedicate the altars, tabernacle and everything in it according to the strictest requirements (see Ex 25:9).

In our services and ways of living, we must live according to God’s measurements and should not superimpose a cubit more or less or to our own liking and concepts. God has given us clear instructions on ways to worship and serve Him and we should not deviate from these instructions.

God commanded the people to bring offerings to Him (see Ex 25:2-7). More specifically, God would like the ‘willing hearted’ to bring offering unto Him. Our offering, services and obedience should be motivated by a willing heart and not be driven by any agenda or motives.

What drives a willing heart you may wonder? Cheerful and willing givers do it with unconditional love and do not expect returns. Willing givers remember the amazing grace and salvation of the Lord God, who delivered us out of the sinful land of Egypt and enemy’s hands. Willing givers worships and lives a life of sincerity and thanksgivings because their hearts are overflowed with songs for God.

If the focus of our worship and ways of living is directed at God’s sovereignty, there would not be room for human’s ideals and personal agenda. God delights in the sincere, truthful and willing heart that worships and serves Him wholeheartedly.

May your strength be renewed at times of sorrow through your worship. May you remember the covenant of the rainbow when your world is overshadowed with grey sky.

And may your heart always be blessed and filled with the songs of love.

I was a bit intimidated reading this because in my mind, it seemed as though worshipping God was so tough because He had already set so many standards that we must not subtract from or dismiss. However, I was then comforted and reminded that God is more gracious and more loving than to just set us rules that seem impossible to comply with wholly. He has given to us a counsellor- the Holy Spirit, to help us and guide us. And also, through the new testament we know that His laws are not hard to keep and in fact, they benefit us greatly and what He wants is for us to serve him willingly and with joy!
