1 Kings Chapter 21

Emotions can be a weak point.

Ahab was easily upset because he could not get Naboth’s vineyard, and so easily did not eat too. Ahab’s greed and not getting what he wanted, easily caused Ahab to become sullen and displeased.

Do we get easily upset because something does not go our way too? Greed and/or desperation may lead to a compromising of values like treating others unfairly.

Let us not let our emotions get the better of us. Instead, let us discipline our body and bring our body into subjection.

1 Corinthians 9:27
But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.

Use the blessings bestowed on us to do good; don’t take advantage of others.

Ahab was probably quite wealthy, but still wanted Naboth’s vineyard because the vineyard was near, next to Ahab’s house. It could be because of convenience, but Ahab could not accept that that vineyard could not belong to himself.

Do we harm or take advantage of (whether or not we have authority over them) or treat other people unfairly because of our own greed?

Jezebel was using Ahab’s authority as an unfair advantage.

If we have some sort of authority, we need to be trusted to use that authority responsibly and we should not abuse that authority, because using unscrupulous means to gain an advantage over other people or put others down is not right.

Let us use the blessings that God has given to us to serve God and to do what is right in the sight of God.

Always choose good.

Ahab was incited by Jezebel and did wickedness in the sight of the Lord (V25)

When incited, do we do good or do bad?

Let us choose to do good no matter what, even if incited. Let us also not incite others. Ahab humbled himself before God and one less calamity befell Ahab because God is merciful (V27, V29). We too have to always humble ourselves before God and repent when we have done something wrong.

May we always choose good and to do good.

Galatians 6:9
And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
