Catching a Great Number of Fish – The 2nd Time

Catching a Great Number of Fish - The 2nd Time

Bible Passage:  John 21:1-14

The last miracle of Jesus.  You would have thought it would be something more spectacular.

But this miracle was not a sign pointing unbelievers toward belief in a resurrected Saviour.

No.  This miracle is very much for us – the believers.  It pulls us back and reminds us about our relationship with the risen Christ and the ministry that awaits us in the world.

Do you remember that we read of a similar miracle with lots of fishes when we first started our month with the miracles of Jesus?  No, not the 5 loaves 2 fish one!  Yes… the one where Jesus performed a very similar miracle in the same lake (Luke 5:1-11) at the start of His ministry.

He got the attention of His early disciples with a dramatic catch of fish – which launched their new careers are fisher of men.  Now Jesus was grabbing their attention once again – by evoking an old memory. And Peter – central in that first miracle – was also the one who reacted the most here.

The miracle showed that Jesus still cared for their daily struggles.  But more importantly, Jesus wanted to direct them in their work. And with His help, they would haul in “catches” beyond their wildest imagination.  Just think about what happened 40 over days later at Pentecost (Acts 2:41).

As Jesus worked under the direction of the Heavenly Father, so should we work under His direction.

And when we do that, like the disciples, our catch will be beyond what we could have caught by ourselves.  And Jesus will do more through us than anything else we could ever have imagined.

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

~ Eph 3:20

We thank our Lord Jesus for the miracles that He did during His ministry and is still doing in our lives everyday.  May the signs, wonders and miracles serve as reminders and triggers for us to do more for the Lord everyday.
