Hebrews Chapter 13

“Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

How can we learn to be content with what we have?

One way is to appreciate and enjoy what we have rather than to get angry and upset with what we don’t have. We need to strive to live with less rather than desiring for more. If we realise God’s sufficiency for our needs, we will become satisfied and feel content.

Believers who become materialistic feel that God does not take care of them the way they want. No matter how much money they have, they will still say that they don’t have enough money. Insecurity can lead us to the love of money regardless of whether we are rich or poor.

But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from. Faith in their greediness and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. (1 Timothy 6:9-10)

The Bible tells us that we must be alert and guard our heart from greed. It is hard to get out of greed. And those who are greedy will not say that they are greedy. We can be greedy with much; we can be greedy with a little. If we are greedy with a little, it is still greed. We should not fall into this kind of temptation.

Greed can be shown in different ways, so maybe we are greedy for money, or we are greedy of status, we are greedy of food or any kind of lust of the flesh. But 1 Timothy 6:9-10 specifically mentions the love of money. Once you are into it, you want more and you can talk about money all the time.

So, let us learn to be content and to trust the Lord that He will provide all our needs. For The Lord Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (13:5b).
