Joel 3

Bible Passage:  Joel 3

The Lord says ‘Vengeance is Mine’. Indeed the Lord is the Judge of all nations and His judgment is clearly illustrated in the Bible. Although at first glance, Joel 3 seems to refer to judgment of Israel’s enemies, however, it could also refer to judgment of the enemies of the church of God (the spiritual Jerusalem) as it later talks about the everlasting Jerusalem (v20).

The Old Testament historical stories of Israel are examples and warnings to Christians today.  The Lord has played out the faith of the Israelites for everyone to read about and illustrated physical rituals of that era as foreshadows of the spiritual significance in the coming of the Lord Jesus. Now salvation is by grace through faith and obedience in the Lord Jesus. No more is salvation by works of the law.

However, the Bible reminds us through Paul that faith’s contents comprises not only believing in Jesus but true obedience to the Word of God. The live of Christians should not entangle in secular cares and pleasures but rather to be true disciples of the commandment of God; loving God with all effort and loving our neighbours as ourselves. This compared to the previous era of fear of punishment, is being motivated by the love of Jesus within us. Our hearts of stone is now transformed by the Holy Spirit to be hearts of flesh.

Some Christians from other churches may think that the historical stories of Israel have no application or significance to their lives. In fact many Christians from other churches I know have no idea or understanding of historical facts and stories in the Old Testament. If they have known, they would understand the significance of keeping the Sabbath Day and baptism.

Our Lord is a God of refuge if we seek Him and draw near to Him. His mercies are so bountiful, and in many instances in the past He gave hundreds of years for sinners to repent. He is also an avenger to those who persecute us. Therefore, as the start of this new year, let us courageously and diligently keep the commandments of God and to preach the kingdom of heaven is at hand! Fear not of persecutions for our Lord remembers us!

As a closing encouragement,

Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.

Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

Therefore,

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Rom 12:17-21)

    “Now salvation is by grace through faith and obedience in the Lord Jesus. No more is salvation by works of the law”

    In fact, salvation has never been by the works of the law,not even in the OT. If salvation could be achieved through works of the law, Christ wouldn’t need to come to die (Gal 3:21). Because the law is powerless to bring about salvation that Christ came to die (Rom 8:3-4)
