Bible Passage: John 2

Transformation

Believing in Jesus from young, I sometimes grow weary in my faith journey. Yet, those times often serve as an opportunity for me to reflect on a deeper level: “Why do I feel so weak in my faith?” “Why don’t I feel joyful in the Lord?”

When Jesus came into this world, He came to bring salvation to mankind. Yet, not only salvation but also hope and joy. He came to transform the lives of those who would believe in Him.

Maybe this was the reason why He transformed water into wine in His very first miracle.

Most people associate wine with pleasure and enjoyment. The Bible too talks about wine in the context of festivals and as a symbol of God’s abundant blessings (Gen 27:28) as well as joy (Judg 9:13; Ps 4:7). Running out of wine can therefore be likened to running out of joy.

We often run out of joy because we are weighed down by worries and stress – stress due to work, school, family responsibilities or even church work. During stressful times we often want to drop everything and run away. But the fact that Jesus turned plain water into aromatic wine for the newly-wedded couple in Cana teaches us an important lesson: We too can find joy in stressful and difficult times, if our relationship with the Lord is right, i.e. if we have the right attitude towards worshiping and serving God.

If our heart is filled with love for the Lord, and if His love can touch us continuously, we will naturally trust in Him in times of trouble. We will naturally feel compelled to obey His words and serve Him more. Love can really go a long way – if we truly love the Lord, we will willingly trust and obey Him and offer up our time and energy to Him – no murmurs, no regrets, only joy.

I pray that the Lord Jesus will keep transforming my heart and yours too, so that we will love and serve Him joyfully until the very end.
