Peter Released from Prison

Bible Passage: Acts 12:7-17

King Herod went extra mile to make sure that Peter was well guarded in the already high security prison (there were at least two security guard posts and one iron gate). Peter was bound with two chains, in addition to the four squads of soldiers who guarded the prison door.

Why did Herod go to such an extent? He may have heard about all the miracles performed and spiritual power manifested in the midst of the apostles; thus worrying that Peter would run away or be ‘taken away’ miraculously?

Herod’s fear was ‘well-founded’ because Peter has indeed been released and led out of prison in such a ‘fictional’ manner. What a miracle!

The power of such miracle no doubt was from God. However, did you notice in v5 that ‘… constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church’. Similarly in v12, ‘… where many were gathered together praying’.

The intercession of the people of God, who collectively is The Church, is equally crucial in today’s context, when we face with trials and tribulations. I am comforted to be reminded of the great power of a constant and collective intercession. I am also reminded of Jesus’ promises of His abidance and fulfillment when we pray collectively (Matt 18:19-20).

Herod’s extra precautions could not deter Peter from being saved by the angel of the Lord. Peter was freed from the physical bondage of the wicked Herod and thereon continued to labour for the gospel. Herod’s chains could not stop the ministry of God because the gospel of the Lord is not chained (Phil 1:12-14; II Tim 2:9).

This is another comforting message for us – that in the midst of any persecutions, difficulties, distress, trials and many uncertainties in the world, there is one thing remains constant, and that is The Word of God. That is the reason we could draw so much comfort and guidance from the scripture at times like these.

I hope you draw comfort from today’s reading. Have a blessed Sabbath.
