Poetry – Song of Solomon 1-2

Can you believe it?  We have come to the final book in the Poetry genre!  And soon, we would have completed reading the Bible in one year!

Frankly, while I have no problems in reading the Song of Solomon, I dread writing about it cause this is one book of the Bible that I seldom read and even though I had attended the series of lessons on Song of Solomon, I am still quite ‘blur’ as to what to say 🙂

So the best thing is this… read it for yourself… and tell me what you have learned!

Bible Passage:  Song of Solomon 1-2

We all know that the Song of Solomon is a love story between a young Shulamite woman and her beloved.  Looking through my old theolo notes, I am reminded that the Song of Songs is a book of beautiful songs that with the wisdom given to us by God, we understand that the author was illustrating the relationship between Christ and the Church as that of a husband and wife.

Christ is the head of the Church and the Church is His body.  Just as the head cannot be separated from the body, the husband and wife is inseparable.

Our Lord Jesus is the beloved to His believers (Church) and the Church is His bride.  So just as a husband loves his wife, Christ loves the Church.  Hence it is only right that the wife submits to her husband just as believers should submit to the Lord Jesus (Eph 5:22-23).

I Belong To Jesus And Jesus Belongs To Me

Reading through the passage, I cannot but help be drawn to Song 2:16…

“My beloved in mine, and I am his….”

This reminds me very much of one of my current favourite hymns.  I am sure you have already guessed it… Hymn 511 Now I Belong to Jesus.

Many a times we take our relationship with Jesus for granted.

We do not consider the enormity of what it means for Jesus to say that we belong to Him.

And when we say we are Christians and that we belong to Him, do we behave as though we really believe it?  Or treasure it?

Reading the Songs is like reading a love story that has its ups and downs.  And sometimes in doing, we may recall our courtship days or even identify with some of the actions or words spoken by the couple.

Do we experience the same thing in our relationship with Jesus?

Just some things for us to consider today.

Once again, I would like to share a youtube video of this hymn of mine that you may have seen before… but as we sing along with the family, do consider the words of the hymn and think about what it means to belong to your beloved and your beloved belongs to you….

Jesus, my Lord will love me forever,
From Him no pow’r of evil can sever,
He gave His life to ransom my soul;
Now I belong to Him;

    Chorus
    Now I belong to Jesus,
    Jesus belongs to me,
    Not for the years of time alone,
    But for eternity.

Once I was lost in sin’s degradation,
Jesus came down to bring me salvation,
Lifted me up from sorrow and shame,
Now I belong to Him;

    Chorus
    Now I belong to Jesus,
    Jesus belongs to me,
    Not for the years of time alone,
    But for eternity.

Joy floods my soul for Jesus has saved me,
Freed me from sin that long had enslaved me
His precious blood, He came to redeem,
Now I belong to Him;

    Chorus
    Now I belong to Jesus,
    Jesus belongs to me,
    Not for the years of time alone,
    But for eternity.

    The daily bible reading blog helps me to read the bible more carefully. To follow the blog i read NKJ first, then i read my ch bible. i learn new things.

    In the ch bible SOS 1-2 recorded 2 parties spoke, the Beloved and the Shulamite. In NKJ, there are the Beloved, the Shulamite, her Brothers and the Daughters of Jerusalem.

    SOS 1:4 is spoken by the Shulamite in ch bible. For NKJ, the first and last two lines are spoken by the Daughters of Jerusalem, may be because the word “we” is used.

    They read differently. Just for sharing, bear with me for a while (eng no good)
    愿你吸引我,我们就快跑跟随你。
    王带我进入内室,
    我们必因你欢喜快乐。
    我们要称赞你的爱情,
    胜似称赞美酒。
    他们爱你是理所当然的。

    你is LOrd Jesus, our God and King. When He attracts us, we run and follow Him. A bro said rightly in his sermon that we must response positively to the love of God.

    He comes into our hearts to bring us into His internal chamber where His truth is. The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, brings us into His truth.

    Why suddenly becomes我们? Bec although there is only one bride, one church, the body has many members. This verse stresses that we are many, each must have a personal relationship with Lord Jesus, our God and King.

    Equally importantly, we be glad and rejoice in our King as one body.

    The love of God is without limit. The love of a man is limited by his form.

    Our God can give His love to everyone in the world and yet the individual portion of love we receive directly from Him is not diminished.

    As for us, we can only love Lord Jesus, our God and King.

    Rightly,do we love Lord Jesus.
