Proverbs 5

Bible Passage: Proverbs 5

It is becoming commonplace these days, the corrupted screech that is being wretchedly repeated, of the perversions of adultery and immorality.

Each time we turn the papers, we read of cases where people engage in clandestine affairs, only to later be exposed. These days, there are also the frequent gossip columns and “entertainment” news updates about who is having a relationship (read: affair) with whom.

Are we worried about such trends?

The chapter today treats the subject of adultery in a way that appears to be innocuously poetic. But once we read deeper into the words of life, we find that these verses are not a poetic treatise of some woman. They are in fact, stern warnings against the sin of adultery.

We ought to make no mistake: Adultery as personified by the woman, ultimately brings the ones who prance about with her, down into the fiery graves of Sheol (Prov 5:5).

The words of life are unabashedly clear about the mindsets of those who are prone to adultery: The adulterers and adulteresses “do not ponder the path of life; their ways wander, yet they themselves do not know it” (Prov 5:6). This is exactly the description of people who only care for carnal pleasures and fleshly lusts. Their minds are only filled with sin and carnal desires and their interests lie in how they will satisfy their sexual urges and whom they wish to bed.

Is it any wonder then, that as attention spans get shorter and shorter today, that people’s desires get harder and harder to fulfill? Is it any wonder then, that the danger of infidelity grows stronger and stronger each day when people’s contentment levels get lesser and lesser?

If we are not careful, if we do not guard our hearts above all else, then the risk becomes all the more bigger. As we read Proverbs 6 and 7 in the days ahead, we will again read of the same warnings that the preacher gives to us. He speaks from experience, and he speaks with the motivation from God. We must drink water only from our own cisterns, uphold the integrity of the fountain springs of our own marriage, and be lost in the love of our own rightful spouse.

Let us take heed to his warnings of wisdom, and act upon our faith to remain loyal and uphold the fidelity of our own marriages with the spouse of our youth. May God bless and keep all our married couples in His grace.

Her feet go down to death,
Her steps lay hold of hell.

Lest you ponder her path of life–
    Her ways are unstable;
You do not know them. (Prov 5:5-6)

For Prov 5:6, NKJV is quite different from the Chinese bible:
以致她找不着生命平坦的道。Such that she cannot find the smooth way of life.
她的路变迁不定,自己还不知道。Her ways are unstable, yet herself is not aware.

NKJV conveys a father’s worry that his child will be enchanted by the immoral woman’s life out of curiosity and ignorance. Her immoral ways are not known to a child of God because they are not found in his life.

When he visits her home, he sets into danger that he is totally unprepared for.

But does danger only lurk outside?

Consider carefully: “I was on the verge of total ruin, in the midst of the assembly and congregation.” (Prov 5:14) How can this happen when one is in the midst of the assembly and congregation?

When one’s heart is not with him in the midst of the assembly and congregation.
Prov 5:22 His own iniquities entrap the wicked man, And he is caught in the cords of his sin.

How close is the way of God to the door of the immoral woman?

    Infinitely distant.

The question is “Are we on God’s highway?”
