2010 - What Is Christianity?,  Gaining of Wisdom

Proverbs 8

Bible Passage: Proverbs 8

D o you hear wisdom calling to you today?

At the beginning of the book of Proverbs, we were asked by biblereadingcompanion if we would open our hearts to listening to the call of wisdom. So when I set out to answer that question for myself, I struggled to say yes with a whole hearted conviction. However, even as the world becomes louder with its various forms of media-facebook, movies, magazines, television programs-we should find a quiet space where we can ponder about God’s word and seek wisdom (for example, as you read this you should be in a quiet space right now).

W isdom is about having an understanding heart.

To have an understanding heart is as Treasureinearthenvessel mentioned: “to use the Word skilfully”….whether it may be in having empathy with people, convincing people about Christ, or understanding the will of God. Like a skill or ability must be practiced daily or routinely, wisdom is practiced in everyday life affairs when dealing with people around us.

E xcellent things of righteousness and truth proceed from mouths full of wisdom.

When we speak words of excellence, only true wisdom fits the description. And thechosen shared with us that true wisdom begins with the fear of God, as the book of James describes; wisdom gives life which should also be accompanied by joy and peace when we share wisdom with others.

L ips that speak of wicked or evil are an abomination.

Such things spoken of evil cause distress and degeneration to those around us are of demonic wisdom, which is self seeking and eventually leading unto death.

L isten to wisdom because its message is directed to you and me.

As shalom put it…this Book is filled with practical Christian life applications-for our spiritual growth. So when we seek wisdom early, whether it may be early in our lives, early in the morning or early in our daily problems, we are seeking for God’s words and His guidance.

W hat is wisdom (or who is this wisdom Solomon writes about)?

It is knowledge of what is true or right coupled with judgement and action (Dictionary.com). But then, wisdom is also described as if a person as if loving wisdom is like loving God himself.

I nstruction and knowledge are the ways wisdom speaks to us.

Thinking about the instructions of my parents, grandparents or teachers, or the knowledge they impart-it becomes my wisdom because I consider it, take it to heart and act on it. Likewise we should strive to value the Words of Life and hope that we obtain wisdom from God.

T raversing the way of righteousness, wisdom stands for what is just.

So here’s a question to answer: Are we worried about these trends [corruption, adultery, immorality]?” asked belovedoftheLord. Yes, definitely, I agree that the standards of the world are deteriorating, that right and wrong seems undefined as people settle for compromise. And so OurKing’sWatchman encouraged us to examine ourselves, as we need remember that wisdom is God’s standard, the standard we are to be judged by in the last day.

H earts seeking wisdom will find it when they search diligently.

It means taking a step further to study His words, being careful in our speech, and developing a Christ-like love towards all people, as summarised by JoyousConcerto, so that we can “attempt new breakthroughs in our faith”.

W hy should I dwell with wisdom?

I nheritance of wealth and everlasting life are the promises of wisdom.

S eek wisdom, listen carefully, follow its ways and find life.

D eath is at the doors of those who sin against wisdom.

O btain favour and blessings from the Lord when you listen and keep words of wisdom.

M ay we understand the value of wisdom and treasure it.

“I love them that love me [wisdom],

And those that seek me early shall find me [wisdom].”

Proverbs 8:17 (American King James Version)

Moses spoke to God face to face and he wrote:
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (Gen 1:1)

Solomon was given wisdom by God and he wrote:
The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way,
    Before His works of old.
I have been established from everlasting,
From the beginning, before there was ever an earth. (Prov 8:22-23)

John followed Lord Jesus and he wrote:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. (John 1:1-3)

Now, i have the Holy Spirit.
Do i not even have the courage to share His gospel with others?

Was Lord Jesus joyful when the Word became flesh on earth?
    Prov 8:31 may give a clue :
Rejoicing in His inhabited world,—- in heaven
And my delight was with the sons of men.—- “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.” (John 4:34, 3:16)

Have i told somebody about the love of God who love me today?
