1 Corinthians 6

Bible Passage: 1 Corinthians 6

A non-believer friend once asked me, “Why can’t you smoke or drink? The bible did not say you can’t do that”. As I was still a fresh believer then, I didn’t know how to answer him. A sister in church told me next time someone asks me a question like that, just refer that person to this verse:

“All things are lawful for me, but all things are not lawful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”

1 Corinthians 6:12

Some of my non-believing friends feel Christianity is a stuffy religion. Christians restrict themselves by abstaining from gambling, smoking, drinking, partying and so on.

Paul uses “All things are lawful for me” to teach the Corinthians about Christian liberty, that Christians are not under bondage. You are free to do anything you like, but you have to question yourself whether it will be edifying and beneficial.

The Corinthian Christians were using their liberty as a license to sin.

Some Christians from other churches may question God’s commandments and try to find loopholes around it. They try to push boundaries, and may use certain verses in the wrong context to justify their actions. They see God as a merciful and loving God, forgetting that He is also a righteous judge.

Yesterday I was watching an old episode of “Friends”, where a pair of lesbians got married in a church. The priest pronounced them “wife and wife”, and said that God is happy that two people got married, any two people will do.

The standards of this world have become more accepting. A few days ago I read an article about an eleven year old boy from Tennessee who is openly gay. In Singapore he would only be in Primary 5.

From the Old Testament we know that God has already greatly disapproved of such behaviours, yet the world, or even some churches condone and encourage such people.

We must not give in or be accepting of the carnal desires the worldly people have today. May God guide us to hold firm to our beliefs and stand firm in our faiths.

Have a blessed week ahead.

I learnt so much from this chapter! Not really new things, but more applicable things to my life right now. Hope to read more and hear the sharings on the chapters.
