1 Kings Chapter 9

Be faithful to God

Verses 3-9

We need to remain faithful to God, keep God’s statutes and commandments, in integrity of heart and in uprightness, then we will receive our reward. If we at all turn from following God, and go and serve and worship other gods, then calamity will come upon us and even the nations will know of our unfaithfulness.

Matthew 26:41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

We need to watch and pray to overcome temptations and to stay sober and vigilant. Let us ask God to forgive us of our weaknesses and ask for help and strength to overcome those weaknesses. The strength that God grants us needs to be paired with our willingness to change being put into action in order for us to truly change. Jesus will come again so let us make preparations to make sure we will be ready to meet God at any time. We are sons of light and God has appointed us to salvation, so let us strive to be diligent in keeping up our best faith till the end.

Give our all to God

As can be seen from this chapter, Solomon built many places and even the temple, and offered offerings often. For us, we should put in our all to God, whether in worship or in doing Church Work. We should give our best to God, and do above and beyond the bare minimum. Our hearts are also the temple of God. We need to feed ourselves with the Word of God to nourish ourselves and build up the temple of God in our hearts. Both building up the Church and ourselves in faith is important.

Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.

We can build up the Church through our interactions with other Church members, like caring for one another and esteeming others better than ourselves, by doing Church work, and by keeping the truth together.

1 Samuel 15:22 So Samuel said: “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.

We should also constantly reflect and repent of our sins in prayer and seek to obey God’s commandments and statutes rather than only repenting.

Help one another

Even though the cities that Solomon gave to Hiram as gifts did not please Hiram (V 12-13),  Hiram still sent men to help Solomon (V 27). For us today, we can help other Church members in Church Work in many different ways. For example, even if we are not on cleaning duty, we can help to clean, or even help to transport brooms and mops. Small acts of helping one another can help make the situation easier for others, and we get to do more for God. 🙂 Let us also not hold grudges when someone has done something small that has happened to displease us. We can and should forgive them and help them when they are in need. May we help one another in our faith too, to build up our most holy faith.
