1 Samuel 13

Bible Passage:  1 Samuel 13

Saul the first king of Israel;
He was humble and meek.
In the beginning he had a good heart,
And the spirit of God abided with him,
And the people also respected him.

One year passed,
And the second came by quickly,
What was Saul like then?
His faith had deteriorated,
And God’s command he disobeyed.

Only a priest or a prophet could sacrifices,
But Saul thought even he could offer too.
He became proud and he did not know it.
However he did not even admit his sin,
Instead he remained impenitent.

Samuel said, “What have you done?”
Yet Saul avoided the truth of his actions,
And he continued on with his ramblings.
He had not even consulted God’s first,
And spoke only of his own righteousness.

“You have done foolishly,” said Samuel,
“You have not kept the commandment of the Lord.”
The Lord sought for Himself a man after His own heart,
And the Lord had commanded him to be commander over His people,
But Saul would not reign anymore because he had disobeyed God.

Without God…His spirit does not abide with him.
Without God
…the enemy seems to overpower them.
Without God
…they were without weapons in battle.
Without God
…they were without guidance and at loss.
Without God
…Saul was not the man he once was.

Sometimes we may begin this journey of faith,
Full of zeal and taking up divine works,
While gaining the respect of people around us.
As time passes whether a short or long period,
If we are not careful
we would be like King Saul.

We may become lost in sin yet we will not see it.
Therefore we need to be aware of our status before God,
And the things we do because He knows our every action.
“To obey is better than sacrifice,
And to heed is better than the fat of rams (1 Samuel 15:22).

God asks of us to:
“Only fear the Lord,
And serve Him in truth with all your heart;
For consider what great things He has done for you.”
“But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away…” (1 Samuel 12:24-25).

Therefore remember God’s commandments.
Continue to read the Bible each day.
Though it may seem God does not work today,
We need to trust Him and His good timing.
And don’t forget to pray always and unceasing.

Better is the end of a thing than its beginning.” (Ecclesiastes 7:8)

What would God’s will be in the big things we did today?

How could Saul and the 330,000 Israelites win the battle against the Ammonites (1 Sam 11:8-11) when only Saul and Jonathan had sword or spear?

It was no wonder that Saul declared that “today the LORD has accomplished salvation in Israel.” (1 Sam 11:13).

When Saul renewed his kingdom in Gilgal (1 Sam 11:15), unlikely that he had a palace waiting for him. May be not even a proper house for him and his family.

The people were distressed in Gilgal (1 Sam 13:6, 5). Saul and the Israelites were in hardship.

But did God lower His requirement on His people to obey His commands bec of the difficulties in life?

i think never would Saul ever imagine that by not following an instruction given by Samuel 2 years ago that “you shall go down before me to Gilgal; and surely I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and make sacrifices of peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, till I come to you and show you what you shall do” led to his kingdom not continuing.

May be the passage of time has eroded the importance of Samuel’s instruction in Saul’s heart.

    Was the LORD too harsh?

1 Sam 13:14 “…because you have not kept what the LORD has commanded you.”

God’s commands are valid for life.

Then upon the expiry of our physical life, we can enter eternal life.
