Law – Genesis 24 – 27

We come to the end of an era today.  After the death of his wife Sarah, Abraham remarried and had 6 more sons (see if you can spot a familiar name there).

But the chief concern for Abraham was to make sure that his beloved son Isaac had a wife – not from the land of Canaan, but back from his homeland.

We read the touching tale of the faithful old servant who practically knelt his way through the mission his master gave him and Isaac loved Rebekah and was comforted after his mother’s death.

Than Abraham died and was buried beside Sarah.

Bible Passage:  Genesis 24 – 27

The life of Isaac followed.  There were ups and downs.

He obeyed God and did not move to Egypt when there was a famine.  God blessed him and he prospered.

Then like father like son, he committed the same error as Abraham and lied to the gentiles that Rebekah was his sister.  God had mercy and a potential disaster was averted.

His wells were taken over by his enemies. He did not fight back and instead was rewarded with exceeding abundance so much so his enemies were afraid of him and sought a treaty.

God now made His promise to Isaac, just as He did to Isaac’s father.

His wife was barren – Isaac prayed and his wife gace birth to twins.

What should have been a marvellous joy turned to a nightmare when deception came upon deception.

Favouritism blinkered the eyes of both parents and lives were destroyed.  Isaac wrongly gave away his blessings.  Rebekah lost her beloved son and saw him no more.  The elder brother bore a hatred that led him to swear death on his brother.  The younger never saw his parents again.

One Thing Came To Mind

As I read today’s passage, I could not help noticing one thing.  One thing was missing in Chapter 27 that was evident from Chapters 24 to 26.

Do you see the same thing?  Want to read it again?

What was missing…..

The answer is…

PRAYER!

A close communication with the Lord God.

In Chapter 24 we see the old servant of Abraham praying and seeking God’s guidance every step of the way.  We also see Isaac meditating in the fields.

In Chapter 25 Isaac pleaded to the Lord for his wife’s inability to have children.

In Chapter 26 after the Lord appeared to Isaac and reaffirmed His promise, Isaac built an altar and called upon the Lord.

In Chapter 27 there was no record of any prayer of worship of God.  And that was when all the bad things happened in the family.

Did you think to PRAY today?

The bible has an amazing way of putting thing in prospective: 25:34 says Esau despised his birthright. Why? bec he sold his birthright for stew of lentils? Yes. The point to note: was Esau starving to point of death that motivated him to make the exchange? No, bec 25:29, 30 &32 said he is weary, not starving. He despised his birthright bec he looked lightly upon the benefits that came with the birthright ie the blessings of the first born. He despised his birthright.

    Do i despise my birthright?

The most powerful blessing of Isaac to Jacob was: “Cursed be everyone who curses you. And blessed be those who bless you!” m i in bad situation bec i bring curses upon myself by cursing “Jacob”?

The choir is impressive! Yes, we can praise God at all ages, even when we are singing with reading glasses, we can praise God in a choir.
