Luke Chapter 10

The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers into his harvest field. (Luke 10: 2)

Agriculture is a timeless event. Ever since the beginning of time, man has used the ground to gain and gather food for sustenance. We continue to do so today! Jesus in His wisdom used a universal sight and experience to depict an important message regarding the work of salvation and this is easily understood by all ages, regardless of the era and time the reader is in.

Working the ground is hard work as it requires one to constantly be under nature’s elements, toiling the ground and sowing the seeds. Not only is hard work and patience necessary, but it also requires God to send forth rain to nourish the earth to allow seeds to grow into crops. Therefore, to have a plentiful harvest is the greatest wish that a farmer can ask for us. Having them all brings great joy and allows him to enjoy the fruits of his labour. Indeed, sweet! Similarly, it is his worst nightmare if he does not have ample labourers to harvest them, for leaving them out in the open field will only lead them to rot and be eaten by animals. A great pity!

In the field of preaching the gospel, Jesus tells us that the field is fertile. Many yearn to hear and receive the gospel, but few are out sharing the message. Therefore He exhorts us to ask our Lord to send forth workers to spread the good news, allowing many more to hear about Jesus Christ for Paul said, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?…(Rom 10: 14 – 15). Not only do we ask, but we heed the calling of Jesus to step out and up to be that worker. To be that willing, hardworking worker who goes out to the field to harvest as much as possible till the season is up.

Do you hear His calling?
