Psalm 62

Today is the start of a new month.  And I do apologize for not getting the Bible Reading Plan for November out in time.

This month we will continue to spend a Month with the Books of Wisdom and we will cover more of the Psalms.  And as you are reading these Psalms, why not see if you can think of any hymns or Christian songs that are appropriate for the Psalm and share them with all of us?

Let’s get started….

Psalm 62

Bible Passage:  Psalm 62

Reading today’s chapter gave me a very different impression from when I read the same chapter a few days ago.

Yesterday, a beloved sister of our church (my aunt) was called back to the Lord.  She had been battling cancer for quite some time and the Lord had mercifully decided that it was time for her to go home.

Yesterday, I also received a text from a brother who was concerned about our brethren on the east coast of US as Super Storm Sandy hit the shores with great fury.

Life is certainly stormful of troubles and uncertainties.  It may be sicknesses.  It may be natural disasters.  It may be attacks by the people around us.  What is certain is this:  we are also vulnerable.  And in the midst of these uncertainties, we need a refuge.

Did you see the movie “Twister”?  There was a part in the movie when the actors were caught in the eye of the hurricane.  And during that brief respite, there was an eerie and unnatural calm when everything around was swirling out of control.  And it may be like our life – where only when we are able to focus on God alone does the power of the storm recede in response to His command, “Peace! Be still!” (Mk 4:39).

David was very much focused on God despite the storms that was raging around his life.  And he knew clearly that only in God alone will his soul find rest.  Only in God alone will he find hope.  And only in God alone will he find refuge.  These words were repeated several times in this Psalm….

He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense;
I shall not be greatly moved.

I heard from my cousin that just before my aunt passed away, she repeated several times that “I am going home”.  She knew where she was going because she knew that she would find rest in God alone.

May we all have faith like David and others before us so much so that we can also say…

Truly my soul silently waits for God;
From Him comes my salvation.

~ Ps 62:1

    In God is my salvation and my glory;
    The rock of my strength,
    And my refuge, is in God.

    Today’s sharing struck a chord with what I’ve been feeling together with this verse. Our glory lies in God, not in the talents he gives us. Lately I’ve been caught up in a storm and suddenly God seems like a mental comfort or denial of reality. However this is not true and I need more faith for me to trust in God to help me get through my trials…
