Psalm 93

Psalm 93

Bible Passage: Psalms 93

Many people are hugely fascinated (or obsessed?) with the British monarchy. I remember watching the live commentary of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration last year and was amazed at how a lot of people had travelled several thousand miles coming in to London, hoping to catch a glimpse of the Queen and the Royal Family.

For the millions of visitors, a trip to the U.K. would not be complete without a visit to the iconic Buckingham Palace (where the Queen officially resides and works), or the historic castle Tower of London (where the Crown Jewels are kept, guarded and displayed).

People are drawn by the history and legacy of the monarchy, the majestic stronghold, and of course at this moment the line of succession to the British throne.

How do you think is the King described in Psalms 93 different to the ruling Kings and Queens of the earth?

Our God reigns forever and to eternity verses the temporal reign of the earthly royals. The majestic power and mighty strength of our Lord God are such that the world was established within. While there may be many territories and lands conquered by the earthly Kings in the history, their supremacy was not ultimate or long lasting.

God’s sovereignty and majestic ruling over his creation give me complete assurance, hope and comfort. According to the riches of His grace and love, we are called children of God (I Jn 3:1). How often have we pondered over the significance of this inheritance and blessing given to us?

Our Father’s eternal sovereignty promises us the eternal inheritance. This sovereignty gives us the assurance of salvation. Unlike the earthly inheritance, the heavenly inheritance is incorruptible, undefiled and does not fade away.

Most importantly, Peter reminds us that this inheritance is ‘reserved in heaven for you’ (I Pet 1:4). How much do we esteem and treasure this amazing grace?

Our environment gives us the impression that at most times, the less valuable items are less superior and meaningful than those which we had to labour harder for.

As a result, we have the tendency to forget things that were given to us more easily and freely. One thing of such is our royal priesthood status, given to us freely, but at the price of His blood shed for us.

In this new year, how do we continue to live out the image of being His children?

If we made a resolution to live a life for God, it is a meaningful start as it serves as a constant reminder in the way we ought to conduct every aspect of our life. The Holy Spirit gives us guidance and helps us to overcome our shortcomings. We also will find mercy and grace at the throne of grace in time of need (Heb 4:16).

Let’s pray for strength and perseverance to keep pursuing the eternal inheritance. Lastly, I would like to share with you the following verses for our New Year/New Beginning mutual exhortation –

… I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me… forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.’ (Phil 3:12-14)

I wish you a blessed year ahead.

“forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead”
Forgetting those things which are behind does not necessarily refers to only the bad things that happened to us. It can also refer to the good deeds/ achievements we have obtained. This way, we can continue to strive to reach the ultimate perfection God wants us to pursue, and not think that we are already accomplished or good.
Let’s strive harder for this new year and hope that whatever we do, we can uphold God’s name.
