Psalms 52

Bible Passage: Psalms 52

A short chapter with 9 verses but each verse is full of lessons we can learn from, and helps us to examine and reflect upon ourselves and our faiths.

This Psalm was composed by David when he was fleeing from King Saul who was bent on killing him. Saul’s chief shepherd, Doeg executed Ahimelech and 84 other priests on Saul’s command. Psalm 52 focuses on Doeg on the harm he caused.

While we do not have enemies hot on our heels, intent on killing us, there are people around us who we dislike immensely or even call them our enemies.

At work, we may face with two-faced colleagues or unreasonable and demanding bosses. In schools, we may be backstabbed by people we call our friends. Unfortunately even in church, in our own families, we could be hurt or wrongly accused by members who say malicious untruths.

People tend to judge or criticize others and jump to conclusions when they do not see the full picture, thinking they know it all. It is really annoying!

David knows that in time to come, God will execute His judgement and vindicate him. He continues to praise, acknowledge, and thank God.

This serves as a comfort to us as God knows the whole truth and He will vindicate those who are wronged. While you may be angered at being wronged, let’s not fall prey to the trap of the evil one by fighting back, and sour relations further. Instead, be patient and wait for God to reveal the truth.

I said, “I will guard my ways, Lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, While the wicked are before me.”

Psalms 39:1

We on our part should be cautious with our tongues, lest we “devise destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully”, as stated in verse 2.

Evil spreads through the church family because of gossips, slander and criticisms. Sin spreads from your speech to the rest of your life. Do you notice people who are hateful with their tongues, are also hateful in other aspects of their behavior?

If we do not discipline or purify our speech, our lives will not be disciplined or purified. Our faiths will not be pure and holy. Our worship will give out a stink instead of a pleasant aroma.

May we be watchful and guard our tongues lest we bring harm to others and ourselves.

So then,[a] my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

James 1:19

    Most of the time I say the wrong thing when I’m tired. One step I can take is to probably sleep earlier and do what is necessary so that my body can cooperate with my will to say nice things:)

    When I say things instinctively to fill up the awkward silence or divert attention away from myself, I find myself saying careless things. It would be better to accept the silent moment and move on to other important business. Thank you for the encouragement today to be watchful of our tongue.
