Psalms 61

Bible Passage: Psalms 61

Have you watched the movie, 127 hours? It talks about the true story of an American mountain climber who was trapped and pinioned under a boulder in an isolated canyon. In order to survive, he resorted to desperate measures.

It is difficult to imagine how anyone could survive being trapped in a place where no one can hear your screams. The closest thing I had to such helplessness was being trapped in a faulty lift for ten minutes. At 10 years old, getting stuck in a lift at an off peak hour was not something you would ever want to happen again.

There are moments in our lives when we are trapped and overwhelmed by life’s circumstances. As panic and anxiety set in, who can help us?

For people who do not know God, who or what can they turn to, to relieve them of life’s tragedies and pain?

For the fortunate ones, they have the support and loyalty of family members and friends. Unfortunately for most, drugs, alcohol, self-mutilation or even food is their only ally. Their lives disintegrate in a downward spiral as a result.

For us the children of God, we have an almighty Father who is able to come into our rescue.

When our hearts are desperate, it is hard to simply say a soft and quick prayer. We are more likely to cry out with emotion and tears, imploring God to hear us. We express trust in His ability and willingness to help us.

At these moments when we are sideswept by life’s circumstances, we have a desperate need to call out to God. With great emotion concerning an urgent need, God hears our cry for mercy.

By calling upon Him with such great urgency, we also shelve our pride and lay aside any attitude of self-sufficiency.

When life’s boulders and rocks threaten to engulf and suffocate us, we can always count on God’s comfort and presence. He fills our hearts with peace, and enables us to live on with joy and hope.

Blessed Sabbath!

I think it’s amazing how we trust in God for deliverance time and time again, and when we receieve his help, we stand in awe. It’s like, we know he’ll help us, but we never actually expect him to.
