Deuteronomy Chapter 11

How was your Spiritual Meeting?

It was indeed wonderful to be able to gather together again for 2 full days to feast on the Word of God together and have fellowship once again after 2 years of not being able to hold a physical convocation.

And to be able to sit and listen to sermons after sermons… it was indeed a blessing.

But that may have not been always the case for us. Sometimes, we may have felt and wondered why are the speakers repeating the same message over and over again. Are there no fresher and more interesting topics to speak about? Why say the same things about obeying commandments, carefully observing the law of God, love God with all your heart, teach your children to obey God….

Ooops….

This is exactly the same message we read in today’s chapter.

And as I read this chapter, this old joke came to mind.

There was a new minister who was assigned to a church. On the first week, he spoke his sermon which was well received. But on the second week, he repeated it again.

And he did so on the third and fourth week. By this time, the congregation could not take it anymore and approached the minister to complain.

The minister simply replied, “If you have applied the teachings of the 1st sermon, I would have moved on!”

While we may laugh at this, there is some element of truth behind it.

God has His message repeated many times so that we have no reason to not clearly understand.

Here the people were reminded of life in Egypt – where crops would grow in the land provided they work hard and bring water from the Nile to irrigate the land. But in the Promised Land, Moses described it wonderfully as a land with mountains and valleys where God sends rain from heaven.

And this land will continually have rain as long as the people lived in obedience (we all knew what happened in the time of Ahab).

But the people were now, to make a decision.

Live in obedience or disobedience.

Live In trust in God or in independence away from God.

Live in contentment or discontentment?

It is easy to say what we will choose when we are reading a passage of the Bible.

But the true test comes in what we actually do in our lives.

There are many things that may resonate with you in today’s chapter. Reflect and act on it.

Just trust and obey.

I hope you enjoy this version of this hymn.
