Deuteronomy Chapter 12

No Fishing

No Eating and Drinking

No Durians (on board bus or MRT)

No …

No …

No …

Many of us in our daily commute will encounter sign boards with these restrictions, especially in Singapore.  What are our responses?  Do we turn a blind ear (and deaf ears), blatantly ignoring such messages, acting blur and feigning ignorance when we are caught doing so, or feeling indignant that our rights and freedom had been forcibly removed from us.

Similarly, if we are told that we can only do certain things at certain places and certain times, do we feel that it is justified to ‘break the rules’ and do as we please, that such regulations are nonsensical and unreasonable.

We merely toe the line, or appear to be toeing the line, simply because there is penalty attached to the regulations, a hefty fine that hurts our pockets.  So we grudgingly and superficially show our law-abiding side, though we are totally different and indifferent on the inside.

However, if we give thought to the rationale behind such ‘restrictions’, we will realize the sanity and wisdom of such regulations, that it is often imposed for the common good, to provide an order that serves the benefit of society at large.  Without which, our ‘freedom’ becomes an inconvenience (and nuisance) to others.  There is often a consequence that our actions may bring, that may be detrimental to others and the environment.

Take the case of the durians onboard an aircon bus.  A poorly sealed package will leave a lingering and nauseating smell in an enclosed space.  So while you satisfy your craving by bringing home your beloved durian, you may leave behind a ‘strong’ and ‘overpowering’ legacy to other passengers onboard the bus.

Similarly in the case of choosing to fish in non-designated areas.  You may satisfy your recreational needs and also the added bonus of a satisfying dinner with the fish(es) caught.  Your action may pose a danger to others in the vicinity and even the environment (https://www.pub.gov.sg/getinvolved/activities/fishing)

We should thus apply the same principle in seeking to understand the instructions of God to His people.  Once we understand that God’s intention is for our good as stated in the following verses, let us gladly and willing abide by His commandments, for they are not burdensome.

Verse 7 – … rejoice in all that you put your hand … God has bless you.

Verse 10 – giving you to inherit, and He gives you rest from all your enemies round about, so that you dwell in safety.

Verse 15 – whatever your heart desires, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you;

As Moses exhorted the people, “Observe and obey all these words which I command you, that it may go well with you and your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God.”

May God help us.
