Jeremiah Chapter 23

Jeremiah 23:1-4 talks about 2 distinct types of shepherds, bad shepherds, and good shepherds.

What did the bad shepherds do that made them become bad shepherds?

Not only they cause the sheep to scatter but they also destroy them (Jeremiah 23:1)

They have become dull-hearted, and they lack interest in the Lord, therefore they have not sought the Lord. As a result, they cannot lead the flock and all their flocks shall be scattered (Jeremiah 10:21).

But good shepherds are set up by the Lord. They are chosen by the Lord to feed the sheep. As a result, the flocks shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, nor shall they be lacking (Jeremiah 23:4). These good shepherds are set up according to God’s heart and they will feed the flocks with knowledge and understanding (Jeremiah 3:15). Good shepherds are there to guide and give the flocks direction.

When we think about shepherds, perhaps we may think of preachers, deacons, and committee’s members. That is true, but it is wider than that.

Jesus asked Peter three times if he loves Him. And each time Peter says, “Yes I do”. And after each time, Jesus replied to Peter “Feed My lambs”, “Tend My sheep”, “Feed My sheep” (John 21:15-17).

Do you love Jesus? If you love Jesus, you qualify yourselves as a shepherd. It does not matter whether you have a formal role in church or not. Because you love Jesus, you are a shepherd.

In fact, many of us are parents, RE teachers and even brothers and sisters in Christ. In these roles, we are leading and being role models for others, especially for those who are younger than us. The younger one may take note of what we do and say, and they will follow us. To them we are their shepherds. Therefore, we must be careful with what we do and say as we are setting an example for others to follow.

Let us be a good shepherd for the flock of God. So, when the Chief Shepherd appears, we will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away (1 Peter 5:2-4).
