Jeremiah Chapter 24

If making decisions is as simple as choosing between two baskets of figs, one with very good figs while the other very bad figs, such heart wrenching situations will no longer be a cause for concern. It is practically a no-brainer.  We should make all the right decisions without the need to fret, pull our hair out nor have sleepless nights, weighing the pros and cons of all factors to arrive at a sound and favorable conclusion.

Our hands down choice will be the basket of good figs. No one in their right mind will choose the basket of very bad figs.  Unless they are of unsound mind, deliberately defiant, hopelessly bad eyesight (can’t differentiate smell also) or one who makes terrible judgement calls.

But we know in reality, life is not so simple.  We are inundated daily with choices that are not clear cut. What makes matters worse is that some of the decisions that we must make, are high stakes. They are tied to serious and life impacting consequences and thus demands careful and conscientious deliberations.

God’s message to the people is clear. If we know what His will is and we submissively follow this will, we shall reap the pleasures from the basket of very good figs.  In like manner, as we confront daily with life decisions, do we seek to know what the will of the Lord is. Do we want our heavenly Father to be a guide in our life, one that we confide and consult, one that we fully trust and obey. Knowing full well that all things work together for those who love Him.

Another important lesson that we can learn from this chapter is that our ways are definitely much lower than God’s way. Many of us when faced with the same situation would think that it is better to remain in Israel rather than be led captive in the foreign lands. Unlike our current situation, where we migrate to another country, seeking a better life. Our counterparts during Jeremiah’s time know that they will likely be outcasts in those lands, likely to be mistreated, oppressed, and ostracized, not having any possessions or sense of belonging.  At least staying back guarantees their own land and possession and a friendly community.

Let us learn to see things from God’s perspective. And to learn to accept His perspective even though it goes against our logic, wisdom, intellect and reason.

May the light of the Lord shine upon us.

And may we be submissive to embrace and remain in the light so that we see.
