Jeremiah Chapter 48
As we read this chapter (as well as the preceding and subsequent chapters) on God’s judgement to the nations, do we exclaimed gleefully as we see justice meted out on the unrighteous.
Yes! Finally!!! These people got what they deserved. But why has it taken God so long to act.
Let us pause and ponder. Is this the main reason why these chapters are written? Are these chapters written solely for the purpose to proclaim and declare the punishments to be meted out.
Is there a pharisee-like behaviour that we are exhibiting when we see only the view of the judge in dispensing the rightful dues to the guilty.
Yes. The Moabites received their dues. God’s righteous judgement is clearly evident for all to see. But isn’t the intent as a forewarning to us that a similar punishment awaits us who follows the Lord. 1 Pet 4:17 – 19 reminds us that we should not take the judgement of God lightly. Paul in Phil 2:12 shared the same sentiment by relaying urgency – in fear and trembling.
What attributed to the downfall of Moab and hence invaluable life lessons for us.
Verse 7 – they trusted in their works and treasures (rather than on God)
Verse 10 – they do the work of the Lord deceitfully,
Verse 11 – they have been at ease since their youth,
Verse 13 – they relied on idols
Verse 26 – they exalted themselves against the Lord
Verse 29 – they are proud and haughty
Verse 30 – they thought that lies and deception will bring them success in their ways.
As we hear the pitiful cries of Moab, does it not instill in us the fear of the Lord. May the Lord help us.
