Proverbs 2

Bible Passage:  Proverbs 2

Choices – something that all want, something that many abuse.

Do you agree?

How many times have you heard someone argue that they have the right to make their own *choices*? (Usually so that they can do something bad/unacceptable)

How often do you see your peers go through boyfriends/girlfriends more quickly than they change their shoes because, well, ‘I have to make sure I *choose* the correct one in the end right?’

How frequently do you observe people around you *choose* not to do the correct thing (on the train, in school, at work etc.)?

After explaining the functions of wisdom in our lives and describing her so we can find her more easily in the first chapter of Proverbs, the second chapter lays out two paths that lie before us; urging us to choose the one that wisdom leads us along.

Do you wish to travel along a path that is guarded by God and a way that He preserves?

Well, all you have to do is to walk the path of wisdom – a path that is tread upon most carefully and circumspectly because the path of wisdom is the path of one who fears God.

This is the path of one who walks uprightly and it leads man to understand what is righteous, just and fair. It delivers us from the way of evil because very obviously, we cannot walk on this path and the path of evil at the same time right?

The consequence of choosing this path is safe dwelling in the land of God and as long as we cry out for wisdom and treasure her, we will be preserved.

The other path, however, moves in the opposite direction. It is a crooked, devious path and one of darkness. It is the path of the immoral woman who leads us away from, instead of towards God.

Those who choose this path are those who forsake wisdom and the consequence of choosing this path is death; to be cut off and uprooted.

Ultimately, wisdom, is not just knowledge and intelligence, it is something that we internalise and practice; especially in the choices we make in our lives every day because it is our choices that determine who we are and where we go at the end.

Remember this…

if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures,
then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God. (Proverbs 2:4-5)

Do we seek after God and His wisdom like seeking for hidden treasures? Are our pursuit of godliness like the seeking of silver?

Sometimes it is really funny how we go all out to achieve something in life (academic excellence, chasing after someone we like, wealth, strange collectibles, level up in our games, gyming to achieve the shape you want, etc etc), but we never really have used the same kind of motivation/enthusiasm in our pursuit of God, have we?

It is really difficult especially as we get busier and busier in life; I am finding that fatigue is one big barrier that is blocking my way to God. That is why Sabbaths are especially precious (and it’s just one more day to Sabbath!) and are by God’s grace.

By making the choice to pursue after His wisdom, by receiving and treasuring His words within us, it can save our lives.

But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 3:14-15)

Let us encourage each other never to give up seeking after His heart.

But from there you will seek the LORD your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. (Deuteronomy 4:29)

I love those who love me,
and those who seek me diligently find me. (Proverbs 8:17)

You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. (Jeremiah 29:13)

It is His promise that whoever seeks Him diligently, and with all his heart, shall definitely find Him.

Seeking wisdom from God is very important. Just like the above post said, we sacrifice time and effort to seek after worldly stuff but never spend enough time with our God.

I think the key is to put God as first priority in our life. Seek Him first and all will fall into place (Matt 6:33).

To further emphasize, we need to seek God as a deer panteth for water. Our desire for God is need to be much stronger than seeking treasure or silver. Water is a need, where as treasure and silver is a want.

This remind me of a worship song “As the Deer”. Inspired by Psalms 42 & 43

Wait, there more than just seeking for God’s wisdom.

Verse 1 tells us to “accept and store” His wisdom

V2 tells us to “hear” intently and “apply” God’s wisdom with our “hearts”

v3 tell us to thirst and cry out for His Wisdom (i.e which leads to v4 seek wisdom like finding treasure)

And finally, when we have God’s wisdom, we will walk in His path. He will be our Shield.

Wisdom is from the Lord, for He alone gives wisdom, and through His word comes knowledge and understanding. This is why wisdom is so precious like treasure, like silver and gold! (Proverbs 2:4 – my favourite verse from this chapter by the way). But, wisdom is for the upright, and the one who diligently seeks after the Lord’s heart.

Therefore, choice is something we all have. There is no good choice or bad choice, but rather, all choice leads us to a consequence. Just like money is neither good nor bad, but it’s how we use it, and what we use it for.

Hence, we have to either make a decision to seek after the Lord’s wisdom, or wisdom of the world. By seeking after the Lord’s wisdom, we will be delivered from the ways of evil and saved from the path of immorality. By not seeking the Lord’s wisdom, we might end up in the path of destruction. We are free to choose, and this is one of the greatest presents that the Lord has given us – mercy and the freedom of choice.

    For the LORD gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding (Proverbs 2:6)

    When wisdom enters your heart,
And knowledge is pleasant to your soul,
    Discretion will preserve you;
Understanding will keep you, (Proverbs 2:10-11)

God gives wisdom to enter into our heart.

Knowledge is good. Discretion preserves. Understanding keeps. When we are on earth.

All these are in vain, if we do not receive eternal life from knowing that there is God:

Then you will understand the fear of I AM WHO I AM.
And find the knowledge of God- the bible.
And find God- True Jesus Church.

And walk humbly with Him- by the Spirit.
